In recent years, essential oils have become a household item for many. While they have long been used to scent bath and cosmetic products, more recently they are being used for their incredible health benefits.
They are certainly effective, but how do they work? Depending on how they’re applied, essential oils can affect both your body chemistry and your nervous system.
Applying an essential oil through aromatherapy affects the nervous system. When we smell an aroma, messages are sent to the limbic system in our brain, which controls both emotions and memories. Because of this connection, aromatherapy can calm our minds, and elevate our mood and emotions.
When you apply an essential oil topically, it absorbs through your skin and affects your body’s chemistry. This is the way to treat ailments like headaches, muscle aches, and minor cuts and burns. This application also improves your general wellbeing and can help relieve stress.
